Unpacking Tips To Get Settled In Your New Home

When moving day arrives, you may feel overwhelmed at the prospect of unpacking at your new home and trying to get settled. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to make the process go more smoothly and ensure you have a bit of time to rest in between unpacking sessions. Here are a few tips you can use as you begin to unpack your home.

Stage Boxes By Room

If your movers haven't already done so, start unpacking by staging boxes in the rooms they belong in. This will prevent boxes from being strewn throughout the house, and you'll find that it becomes easier to unpack when all items for each room are separated. You can even take this idea further by separating stacks of boxes by what goes in each closet, dresser, or cabinet. This way you can simply remove all of the contents from each box into the proper place.

Dispatch Storage Boxes

Boxes that are earmarked for storage in the basement, closets, or attic don't need to be unpacked at all. Save yourself time by leaving these boxes sealed and labeled, and simply move them to the designated storage area. Completing this task can make it feel as though you've made a lot of progress quickly, as you'll see stacks of boxes disappear before your very eyes.

Prioritize Essential Items

Not everything has to be unpacked right away. In fact, you'll be more relaxed and ready to take your time unpacking things properly if you prioritize which items are essential. As you pack your items, label boxes with the word "essential" to let you know which containers need to be unpacked on the day you arrive. These boxes might contain towels, bed linens, soaps, shampoos, or baby essentials. Focus on unpacking these boxes when you arrive in your new home, and work through nonessential items in the days that follow.

Take Frequent Breaks

You want to make sure that everything is properly unpacked and put in its proper place. One way to encourage this is to take frequent breaks as you unpack. Without breaks, you may feel rushed to get the job done, and the result might be a junk drawer in the kitchen or closets filled with mismatched items. Consider selecting a favorite sitcom to binge-watch, and reward yourself after every so many boxes by getting to sit down and watch an episode.

Be sure to discuss your unpacking plan with a moving company, like Santa Fe Storage & Moving, as the movers may be able to help you stage and prioritize your boxes to make unpacking an easier task to tackle.
